Opening reception:
April 1, 9pm-12amHAUNT is pleased to present I Need You, a solo exhibition by Vancouver-based artist Susanna Browne. The site-specific installation features new sculpture and video work made in the interest of considering the tropes of desire and the performance of romantic love. Predictable representations of adoration—a bouquet of flowers, the flickering light of candles and a love song—devise a scene of yearning and infatuation that indulges in overt sentimentality. Browne creates an appeal to devoted attention, staging love props and cues from the spectacle of longing, allowing moments of celebrity and material worship to collide in a narrative of faith, delusion, and decay. From the substructural domestic setting of HAUNT, a wood-panelled basement, the stars of I Need You—the actors and diamonds—brush the boundaries of escapist fantasy and nostalgic mistranslation.
Susanna Browne (b. 1987) is a Canadian artist based in Vancouver. She holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and an MFA from Piet Zwart Institute. Through her mining of pop culture tropes, Browne’s multi-disciplinary practice confronts personal and public histories of longing with both humour and sincerity. Calling on the sentimentality of everyday emotional languages, Browne conflates subversion with infatuation, skepticism with desire. Her work has been exhibited in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Canada.
